New Kit, New Merch

The much-anticipated arrival of the Lumberjacks’ new kit is finally here!! Introducing the new kit for this year’s Bingham tournament!! Soon you will see the Lumberjacks sporting a new take on our rugby kits from our favorite brand, Akuma. This iteration of the kit veers away from our traditional blue and green palette as we represent our Lumberjack pride in a colorful design of the iconic Portland sign and Mount Tabor against a black background. Keep your eyes out for these new kits in May when the Bingham Brigade leaves the PNW and crosses the pond over to Rome, Italy for the 22nd Annual Bingham Tournament, celebrating the game of rugby in the name of Mark Bingham, a former rugger for the San Francisco fog and a hero during the 9/11 attacks.

In other merch news, the spring season and Bingham has also brought forth the team’s limited-edition t-shirt designed by one of our ruggers, Will Kertz. Pre-sale for this shirt has opened today, Friday April 5th, and will remain open until April 30th. Proceeds from the sale of this Bingham shirt will go towards costs related to travel and logistics for the team’s presence and participation in the Bingham tournament.

Orders for the Bingham t-shirt can be placed through this link.

As always, we appreciate your continued love and support as we continue to represent the only inclusive-rugby team in Portland, Oregon through our collective love for the game of rugby!

Countdown to Victory: Preparing for the First Game Against Seattle Quake

As the clock ticks towards our highly anticipated first rugby game of the spring season against the Seattle Quake on March 16th, the pressure is growing! In just 5 weeks, we have 10 scheduled practices or 20 hours remaining until kick-off, and our team must stay ready to excel on the field. The first step towards success is attending practice regularly. Each session offers an opportunity to fine-tune techniques, develop strategy, and build camaraderie with teammates. By showing up consistently, we ensure that we are up to speed with the team's progress and can actively contribute to the game plan. But attending practice alone is not enough. We must stay focused and fully engaged during every drill, exercise, and scrimmage. This level of attentiveness not only sharpens our skills but also demonstrates our dedication and commitment to our teammates.

Moreover, hard work is crucial. Rugby is a physically demanding sport, requiring strength, endurance, and agility. Pushing ourselves during practice, giving our all during fitness drills, and striving to do better every time will ultimately pay off on the field. Lastly, self-improvement is essential. Take time to reflect on your strengths and weakness, and identify areas that require growth and opportunities for improvement. By dedicating effort towards these areas individually and as a team, we can enhance our overall performance and become a stronger force on the field. With the clock relentlessly ticking, the Seattle Quake rugby game is approaching fast. By consistently attending practice, staying focused, working hard, and actively working on areas for growth and improvement, we ensure that we are fully prepared to conquer the challenges that lie ahead. Let's rally together and make this season one to remember. Go Lumberjacks!

Spring Season Practice is in Full Force!

We had an outstanding turnout at Rugby 101 and would like to welcome all of our new recruits to the Lumberjacks!

Practice for the spring season has entered its second week for the Lumberjacks!

Rugby is such an exciting sport. In order to help prepare for the spring season, here are a few things every rugby player can do:

1. Physical Conditioning: Focus on improving your overall fitness level. Engage in activities such as running, cycling, and strength training to build endurance, speed, and strength.

2. Skill Development: Work on improving your rugby skills, such as passing, catching, tackling, and kicking. Find a training partner or join a local rugby clinic or club to practice these skills regularly.

3. Game Strategy: Study the game and understand different strategies and tactics used in rugby. Learn the different set pieces, plays, and formations that your team will likely use during the season.

4. Teamwork: Rugby is a team sport, so it’s important to strengthen your teamwork skills. Focus on communication, trust-building, and understanding the roles and responsibilities of each position on the field.

5. Safety: Ensure that you have the proper safety gear, including a mouthguard and appropriate rugby boots. Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of the game to ensure your safety and the safety of your teammates.

6. Nutrition and Hydration: Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated to fuel your body for practices and games. Adjust your diet based on your training intensity and consult a nutritionist or sports specialist if needed.

7. Mental Preparation: Rugby can be physically demanding and mentally challenging. Practice mental techniques such as visualization, goal setting, and positive self-talk to enhance your performance and stay focused during games.

Lastly, enjoy the journey! Embrace the challenges and growth opportunities that come with playing rugby.

Rugby is a commitment physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, and time-wise, and we couldn’t do it with you.

THANK YOU!

In December, the Lumberjacks joined other West Coast IGR Teams (Vancouver Rogues, Seattle Quake, San Francisco Fog, Los Angeles Rebellion, San Diego Armada, and Phoenix Storm) for the annual Rucktacular tournament - hosted by the LA Rebellion. This annual tournament has grown to include West Coast IGR teams, and it’s great way for teams to socialize in a friendly round-robin style of play. Thank you to the LA Rebellion for hosing a great tournament!

As we begin 2023, there are a number of ways to socialize with the Lumberjacks - the first of which is the return of our ever-popular RuggerCub on Saturday, January 7th hosted by the Eagle PDX. Come out to the Eagle and meet the team, purchase Jell-O shots from our dancers, or even bid to purchase a jock off a rugger! The event is $10 at the door, which includes a free clothes check. All proceeds will go to support the team’s effort to raise funds for equipment, field rentals, match-day officials, scholarships, and tournament entry fees. We look forward to seeing you there!

Additionally, we are seeking individuals to join our coaching staff! For more information, please see our coaching criteria - and fill out our Coaching Interest Form.

In less than a month, we begin our Spring 2023 campaign, and the Lumberjacks invite you to any of our practices to check out what it’s like to be a Lumberjack. We welcome players regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, race, religion, age, or physical ability. No experience necessary - we’ll teach the skills to become the Rugger you’ve always dreamed of being.
